Damodar River
(Krishok Setu) : The town Bardhaman stands by the river
Damodar. The river acts as the anchor of this town. The
word ‘damu’ signifies holy and ‘da’ is water. This river is as holy to the
aborigines of Chotonagpur as Bhagirathi is to the Hindus. The source of this river is Sonajuria falls of Bijonsa Hill which is situated in the district of
Palampur, Bihar. Damodar meets Barakar at Disergarh and flows through the districts of
Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah finally meets
Bhagirathi. Bardhaman, surrounded by the branch rivers of
Damodar- Balluka, Behula, Gangur, Banka etc (some of which have become almost extinct at present) , takes the shape of a delta. The civilization of ‘Rarh-Bangla’ has developed centering this river. The bridge over this river at Sadarghat is known as ‘Krishok
Setu’. Picnic at the sandbanks and boat rowing at Damodar provide great pleasure. Nature has unwrapped her glory in the vast expansion of
Damodar. Kite-flying at the reputed fair of ‘Poila
Magh’ ( 1st day of Magh) provide another charm of this river. |

Bijoy
Toron: The eye-soothing tower is set up following the pattern of the gateway of India of
Mumbai. This tower is situated at the meeting place of G.T Road and B.C. Road. The tower got its shape in the hands of an Italian sculpture. The previous name of this tower was ‘Star of India’.
A.F. Hugh had painted a picture of it and gifted it to the citizens of
Bardhaman. The pillars, the lions of both sides, cornice, the fretted decorations and the three fairies at the top of this structure are one of the best instances of sculpture. The two side arches and the main arch deserve your passing glance. |
